1. Tony Abbott eats a raw onion (2015)

One can only assume Abbott’s intrusive thoughts won. In 2015, he bit into a whole raw onion that appeared unpeeled, the way one may bite into an apple. Mr Abbott appeared unaffected by its taste, appreciatively nodding as he chews. Very strange behaviour.

2. Scomo tackles child (2022)

A grown man crashing into a small child in a soccer pitch? Classic election campaign moment. The picture speaks for itself.

3. Did Scott Morrison Shit His Pants at Engadine Maccas? (2018)

While we’re on the Scomo topic, Engadine-Maccas-lore had to make this list. For those unfamiliar, a myth circulated, following a tweet in 2018, that Morrison shit his pants at the Engadine McDonalds in 1997. The rumours refused to die, peaking around the 2022 federal election. It was apparently a complete fabrication, according to the rumour-starter, Rowan Dix. How much did the Liberal Party pay you to say that, Mr Dix?

4. Sigmas of Australia (2024)

Senator Payman’s speech to Parliament began, “To the sigmas of Australia, I say that this goofy ahh government have been capping”. She continued using brain rot internet terminology, with highlights including ‘skibidi’, ‘ohio’, ‘capaholics’, and my favourite, ‘gyatts and services tax.’ While purposely comical, Payman’s speech, addressed in ‘relatable terms’ to Gen Z and Gen Alpha, was totally uncool and unfunny, and thus, hilarious.

5. Temu Trump (2025)

During Question Time, Stephen Bates, Greens Member for Brisbane, asked the PM: “Prime Minister, why would you invite Donald Trump to Australia when you have a Temu Trump sitting right next to you?” It’s been labelled a ‘cheap political stunt’ online, but we at Semper think it’s hilarious.

6. Let There Be a Thousand Blossoms Bloom (2017)

Simply the best. Bob Katter’s speech regarding marriage equality, and his abrupt switch-up to talk about crocodiles, will remain one of the most golden Aus Pol moments for years to come. Katter is a same-sex marriage opponent – who once claimed that gay people did not live in his Queensland electorate. LOL. But I ain’t spending any more time on it!

7. The Suppository of All Wisdom (2013)

“No one,” said Abbott, “however smart, however well-educated, however experienced … is the suppository of all wisdom.” His slip-of-the-tongue made him a global news figure of ridicule. Haha, bum jokes.

8. Bill Shorten eating hot dog from middle out (2016)

This managed to fly under the radar a bit, but Bill Shorten very awkwardly bit into the middle of a hot dog, rather than the end, as a normal person would. Shorten has recently stated that he’s never forgotten the failure and wishes he could go back and “turn that sausage and bread and eat it a different way”.

9. KRudd Loves One Direction (2011)

I don’t have much to say about this image other than I find it genuinely hilarious. Kevin Rudd is a Directioner, confirmed. I wonder if he shipped Larry Stylinson.

10. April Sun in Cuba (2022)

Scomo holds 3 of these 10 titles – but his fuck-ups genuinely live in my mind rent free. And it’s my list, so here is another Scomo moment: Following his escape to Hawaii mid-bushfire-chaos, you’d think the then-Prime-Minister would have stayed away from Hawaiian-adjacent memorabilia. But, think again! Morrison left audiences speechless by performing a suboptimal rendition of ‘April Sun in Cuba’ by Dragon. The band Dragon called the performance “a cynical move for a politician to co-opt music in an attempt to humanize themselves come election time.”
