When I saw Batman Vs Superman in 2016, I swore off DC. I felt like the characters that were so ingrained into popular culture had actually turned out to be these evil, sinister shadows of what they were meant to be. Now, nine years later, and seven months into the trenches of a DC obsession rabbit hole (just check my Letterboxd), I feel like I can solidly say that James Gunn’s Superman is a breath of fresh air.
Gunn brings us into an already established world, the presence of metahumans has been known to the world for 300 years, and Clark Kent is already years into his career as Superman. David Corenswet brings life to the character not previously seen since the movies starring the late Christopher Reeve. Watching the movie felt like a comic book had come to life, complete with vibrant colours and characters who are unafraid to show emotion and weakness.
Rachel Brosnahan’s performance as Lois Lane really stood out to me. I’m ashamed to admit that in most other adaptations, I couldn’t bring myself to like her character, but in this film, she is brought to life as her own character; she’s strong, brave, and not afraid to challenge Superman if she doesn’t agree with him.
Lex Luthor is a standout in this movie. His commitment to his hatred of Superman knows no bounds and ultimately ends up hilarious to watch.
The overall plot and pacing of this movie were outstanding, there was never a moment I felt bored, or like anything in it was unnecessary, James Gunn truly understands the legacy of the characters he is working with, and he truly succeeded in making them feel so real and alive.
I came out of the movie wanting to see it again (and I in fact did go back). If you’re looking for a hopeful story with a wonderful cast of characters and a beautifully built world, Superman is the movie for you.
5/5 Stars.
