I had the pleasure of attending the UQ Union International Collective’s Candlelight Concert on the 3rd of June.

The advertisement for the event outlined a night of music and candlelight underneath the stars out at the Amphitheatre on the UQ lakes. However, I was informed by the organisers that, due to the cooler-than-expected evening, the event had been moved inside the Advanced Engineering Building.

The event kicked off at 5:30 as three violins and one cello rung out. The performers were disciplined and seemed more than comfortable performing for such a large crowd.

Their repertoire was extensive, drawing from a range of sources. Speaking with attendees afterwards, it seemed that everyone had at least one tune they recognised.

During the event, I ran into Anshraj Srivastava, the International Officer for the UQ Union (pictured above, left) and Hanirud Velayutham, the Community Officer of the Union (pictured above, right).

Sitting behind me was also the union president, Jaafar Jabur (pictured above, left).

The organisers of the event should be very proud of their work, as there was a significant turnout despite students being involved in their swotvac preparations.

It has provided students with a fantastic reprieve from the monotonous study over this week-long period.

The event was well catered for with a large variety of nibblies, both savoury and sweet, as well as a few punches to choose from.

This event was truly the cherry on top of the wonderful work that the UQ Union International Collective has done throughout the first semester of this year. Looking forward to more fantastic events in the semester to come!

Heya curious reader! I'm currently studying a Bachelor of Law/Arts majoring in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies and Political Science. I served as a councilor in the UQ Union in 2024 and very much have an interest in all things UQ Union related. Please have a read through my articles and you can find out about the goings on around campus. I grew up in the wonderful Toowoomba region and have a soft spot for the countryside and regional living as it very much influences my writing and broadens my perspective. Toowoomba's only about two hours drive West from Brisbane and even less from Gatton; I'd highly recommend visiting during the Spring in September when all the flowers are out. Hope you enjoy reading through my articles while you're here!
